Mission Outreach Goals

1. Increase the number of people served in local mission outreach.

Local Missions sponsored by AUMC Mission Team that serve individuals:

  • Community Thanksgiving Dinner
  • Mosaic project
  • Blessing Boxes
  • North Smyrna Elementary Staff project
  • Senior Helper Program

Partnerships:

  • Smyrna Ministerium Food Pantry
  • Fresh Start
  • Prison Release Ministry

2. Increase the number mission opportunities for Asbury congregants to serve adults and youth the Smyrna/Clayton area.

  • Community Thanksgiving Dinner – persons may be involved by donating money to the 2nd Sunday offering dedicated to CTD, and youth and adults may volunteer to help serve the dinners.
  • Mosaic – Persons may be involved by donating money to the 2nd Sunday Offering to buy Christmas gifts for residents, and youth and adults may volunteer to prepare food for the bimonthly activity, and/ or volunteer to go in person to interact with residents. Contact Betty Mountain.
  • Blessing Boxes: persons may be involved by donating specified foods and/or personal care items, or money to the 2nd Sunday Offering dedicated to Blessing Boxes, or may volunteer to monitor the boxes and refill them as needed. Contact: Penny Carney
  • North Smyrna Elementary Staff Appreciation project: persons may volunteer to decide on what to take to the school every other month, make or buy items to take, deliver items to the school. Contact Betty Mountain
  • Senior Helper Program – persons can volunteer to do minor home projects such as changing light bulbs or batteries, repair minor faucet leaks, loose railing or similar items. Contact Jennings Hastings

Partnerships:

  • Smyrna Ministerium Food Pantry – persons may donate food at the church for the pantry and /or volunteer to work at the pantry which is open Monday – Friday from 9:30-10:30 am at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Union Street.
  • Fresh Start – persons can donate money to the 2nd Sunday Offering to provide rent, utility, transportation, and temporary housing to local persons in need, and/or to volunteer to help distribute fresh food at the Friday giveaways at Asbury UMC. Contact Susan Wolfe
  • Prison Release Ministry – persons can donate bicycles, volunteer to help released prisoners obtain a drivers license, volunteer to mentor released prisoners.  Contact Susan Wolfe

3. Increase the number opportunities in mission outreach beyond the Smyrna Clayton area.

  • Red Bird Mission Trip – provides an opportunity for Asbury congregants to go to Beverly Kentucky for a week long mission experience. contact Susan Wolfe
  • Youth Summer Trip – provides an opportunity for Asbury youth to participate in a Summer Mission e experience. Contact Michelle Wilson
  • Camp Pecometh: provides opportunities for Asbury Youth to attend a Methodist Church Camp experience.
  • Opportunities to contribute financially to national and international mission projects through 2nd Sunday Offerings: UMCOR – administrative aid and Disaster Relief; Support the UMC Conference annually; Liberian Partnership

4. Form partnerships with those organizations that serve the Smyrna- Clayton community.

  • Smyrna Ministerium – to serve the community Food Bank
  • Fresh Start Resource Center Smyrna -to serve persons insecure in housing
  • Delaware Food Bank – to serve persons insecure in food
  • Prison Release Ministry – to serve persons in reentry after serving prison time.
